Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity and Inclusion
We are committed to creating an environment that is inclusive of all people. We are committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects the patient population we serve. We aim to seek applicants with diversity in religion, race, ethnicity, gender, background, and orientation. As an institution, we acknowledge the importance of creating an environment and workforce centered upon a common goal: improving the health of our community including our patients and their loved ones.
Our Emergency Department strives to maintain an environment of tolerance and inclusion, where trainees and faculty of various backgrounds are accepted within our Baystate family. In light of the current injustices in the world, our department has committed to consistently engage in open dialogue regarding health inequities, bias, and cultural competence. We incorporate open dialogue in our journal clubs, didactics and foster an open environment with diverse thoughts and people. The department is committed to addressing health disparities through scholarly work and multidisciplinary collaboration within our institution.
Our Residency is actively recruiting applicants from diverse backgrounds and students who are traditionally underrepresented in medicine. We have a zero tolerance policy for discrimination and will continue to foster a culturally sensitive environment for all residents. We want you to feel safe here.

UNDER-REPRESENTED IDENTITIES IN MEDICINE
University of Massachusetts Medical School Chan – Baystate (UMMS Chan-Baystate) offers an Acting-Internship (AI) rotation each year for students interested in Emergency Medicine. We’re excited to offer a new opportunity for Under-Represented in Medicine (URiM) visiting students.
Our Departmental Mission
UMMS Chan-Baystate looks to build a workforce that reflects the diversity in the community that we serve and include individuals who are underrepresented in medicine with backgrounds and experiences that would diversify our program. We believe that the future of emergency medicine workforce requires diversity in the forms of race, ethnicity, sex, gender, socioeconomic status, educationally disadvantaged and more. We encourage all those who identify as such to apply.
We have been able to retain diverse trainees by fostering an environment of acceptance, inclusion and support from day one. We are proud of the diversity we have and are committed to continue to cultivate an environment and workforce centered around a common goal: improving the health of our community.
The Application
We have developed a scholarship for URiM visiting students in order to expand on our mission, while assisting URiM applicants with the financial burden that comes with visiting electives. The application is no longer EM specific, but can be found on your VSLO application. Learn more about applying by clicking here.
